USCIS extends grace period for Green Card renewals

By October 5, 2022October 5th, 2023No Comments

Green card holders who file to renew their expiring or expired card will now have a 24-month grace period thanks to an extension approved by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and implemented effective Sept. 26, 2022.

USCIS is automatically extending the validity of Green Cards from 12 to 24 months for lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.

LPRs who properly file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card may receive this extension. Form I-90 receipt notices had previously provided a 12-month extension of the validity of a Green Card. These receipt notices will now show a 24- month extension for applicants with a newly filed Form I-90. USCIS has begun printing amended receipt notices for applicants with pending I-90 applications.

If your Green Card has expired and you have an application pending to renew your Green Card, you should present your receipt notice with your expired Green Card as evidence of your continued status as an LPR.

If you no longer have your Green Card and you need evidence of your LPR status while waiting to receive your replacement card, you may request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center to request an “ADIT” (Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications) stamp after you file Form I-90.
